A Very Bad Precedent

A Very Bad Precedent Prof Andy Short says we’re about to destroy a famous beach to save houses. Is this a trend? South Narrabeen on fire last winter. Photo: Matt Dunbar Sean Doherty Link copied to clipboard After decades of debate, delay, buck-passing, protest, counter-protest, kicking the can down the road and swimming pools falling into the sea, construction work is underway on a 1.3km section of seawall between Collaroy and South Narrabeen on Sydney’s northern beaches. There’ll be no planned retreat from the rising ocean. They’re digging in. The issue is perfectly vexed. Private houses, public beach… and you can only save one. While the wall provides protection for the 49 private and 11 public properties behind the wall, the beach in front of the wall is now on borrowed time.

Construction of the Collaroy South Narrabeen seawall begins, but residents funding questions remain

However he said footing the additional costs would not be easy for residents. In fact, some residents have had to dip into their superannuation. It s not a rich list here, it s a lot of different family people who have had to come up with $300,000, Mr Orth told 9News. At the moment the contribution from state [government] and council is only based on construction, which is once you physically start building the wall. Prior to that, there s a lot of costs [such as engineer and legal fees]. Collaroy homes were almost consumed by huge king tides in 2016. Residents were evacuated and temporary retaining walls to stabilise properties.

Coronavirus lockdown contributes to horror drowning death season in Australia

Australia has experienced a spike in drowning deaths in the summer of 2020/2021 after fitness levels plunged during Covid lockdowns, a top lifesaver has warned. At least 55 people have died as a result of drowning this summer alone, compared to just 43 at this time last year.   According to Liam Krige, the general manager at Life Saving Victoria, the staggering amount of drowning deaths this season is done to dwindling fitness and a blase attitude to the dangers. The sad reality is that people think it s not going to happen to them, or that they don t need to worry about it, Mr Krige told The Age.
