700 pounds of trash collected during Earth Day at Heavenly Village area and Spooner Sled Hill

Volunteers at the Spooner Summit sled hill To celebrate #EarthWeekTahoe, volunteers came out in force to clean up winter litter that had been buried under snow until the recent spring melt. Ninety-six volunteers removed more than 700 pounds of trash from Heavenly Village and the litter-plagued, unofficial sledding hill near Spooner Summit during events on April 22, 23, and 24. While Earth Week is a fitting occasion to combat pollution in Tahoe, litter is a year-round problem that requires constant action to avoid harm to wildlife, the Lake’s delicate ecology, and the Basin’s scenic beauty. “It might be Friday afternoon, but it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is. I’m out here taking care of the place I love most,” noted Geoff Miller, a cleanup volunteer and leader of one of the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s Tahoe Blue Crews. “I don’t mind devoting my time and energy to bringing this place back to how beautiful it is naturally.”

South Shore Community Cleanup planned during Earth Week in Tahoe

April 22, 2021 - 9:00am SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The League to Save Lake Tahoe will host a community litter cleanup event on the South Shore to celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22. Help Keep Tahoe Blue by participating in the kick off of Trash-Free Thursday, one of a week-long series of themed days to ring in #EarthWeekTahoe. The 9:00 a.m. to noon event is open to everyone, but to ensure the health and safety of all involved, participation in the cleanup is by RSVP only. As spring rolls into Tahoe, melting snow reveals a winter’s worth of litter. Tahoe’s world-renowned natural beauty and delicate ecology don’t play well with to-go food waste, disposable masks, and a rainbow of plastic trash left on sidewalks, trails and sled hills. The League to Save Lake Tahoe invites members of the public to join a morning of physically distanced TLC for the planet.
