Most were arrested in townships in the former capital Yangon, where martial law was declared following the army’s coup against the elected civilian government on Feb. 1, 2021.
Local fighters and ethnic armies battled the regime in several places, a female NLD lawmaker was arrested and the junta shelled an IDP camp among many other incidents.

To date, explosions in Yangon have primarily targeted regime-affiliated locations. However, other locations are now being targeted. There are an increasing number of barricades in front of some diplomatic missions and sandbags at many police and military positions. There have been reports of explosive devices being thrown from passing vehicles at or near police and military troops, and those troops responding by shooting at the vehicle. At all times, U.S. citizens should continue to exercise caution when traveling in Yangon.
Myanmar Writer and Family Detained by Junta

Writer Hnin Pan Eain, her husband Ko Nay Oo – a former political prisoner – and their son were detained by the regime’s forces in South Dagon, Yangon, on Wednesday night.
According to a source close to the family, soldiers and police searched their house at midnight and detained the family. The reason for their arrest and their whereabouts are unknown.
Hnin Pan Eain formerly took part in the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP)’s mental health assistance program for former political prisoners and their relatives and to help COVID-19 patients last year.

MAE SAM LAEP, Thailand The military launched more airstrikes Tuesday in eastern Myanmar after earlier attacks forced thousands of ethnic Karen to flee into Thailand and further escalating violence two months after the junta seized power.
