Last Saturday, I offered praise to Lincoln voters who produced a healthy turnout in the city’s consolidated election. Naturally, I also congratulated the winners, mayor-elect Tracy Welch and Wanda Lee Rohlfs, who will represent Ward 3 on the city council.
But I also signaled out Rohlfs’ opponent, Aimee Bulthuis Galvin, who lost by a 22-vote margin. An Independent, Galvin based her campaign on promoting local tourism and addressing issues with affordable housing, empty lots and revitalization of dilapidated properties.
The latter, referring to parts of our town that seem to be crumbling right before our eyes, is an issue the city council has pretty much ignored. I’m unsure why demolishing or fixing up these properties has not been addressed by aldermen, but I suspect the legal mine field the city might have to navigate in doing so keeps City Hall from venturing into this mess.

JOLIET, IL A 34-year-old Joliet man is no longer in custody after being charged with a repeat offense of domestic violence. Joliet police arrested
Glenn Reeves, who lives in the apartment units in the 1900 block of South Chicago Street. He faces two counts of domestic battery, both felonies.
The criminal complaint indicates that Reeves was convicted of domestic battery in 2018 in DuPage County.
The incident that led to his latest domestic battery charges occurred Marc 21. According to court documents, Reeves struck a woman in the head who was a relative or family member.

JOLIET, IL Three people were taken to Joliet-area hospitals Wednesday afternoon after a car struck vehicles in a funeral procession along South Chicago Street, according to Joliet police.
The crash happened around 12:05 p.m., police said. The car was northbound on Route 53 (is South Chicago Street) from Mills Road when the driver lost control and swerved into the oncoming lanes, police said.
The driver tried to re-enter the northbound lanes and then struck four separate vehicles that were participating in a funeral procession traveling southbound Route 53 approaching Mills Road, police said late Wednesday night.
