SoCalGas to partner with SunLine Transit Agency to Test Combination of Technologies to Produce Hydrogen from RNG – Advanced BioFuels USA

(Green Car Congress) Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) will demonstrate a combination of technologies that will produce hydrogen from renewable natural gas (RNG) at SunLine Transit Agency’s hydrogen fueling station in Thousand Palms, California. The research project, called “H2 SilverSTARS,” will produce renewable hydrogen to fuel SunLine’s fleet of 17 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and support further expansion. The combination of new technologies will make it possible to provide renewable hydrogen made from RNG at natural gas fueling stations or any location near a natural gas pipeline. The goal is to produce emissions-free renewable hydrogen for fuel cell electric cars and other vehicles at a price competitive with gasoline.

Sempra s California, Texas Utilities Focusing on Decarbonization, Regulatory Boost

Sempra’s California, Texas Utilities Focusing on Decarbonization, Regulatory Boost Energy infrastructure holding company Sempra Energy wants its California and Texas utilities to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045, but they need some help from technology innovations and regulators, executives said. A key for California utilities, including Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas), is developing renewable natural gas (RNG) as a decarbonizing tool, CEO Jeff Martin said during a 1Q2021 earnings conference call. SoCalGas is nearing the milestone of 5% RNG in its distribution system. Martin said Sempra is advocating for the equivalent of a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) to develop RNG. Using RNG in the marine and on-road transportation sectors will earn renewable energy credits for the operators, he said.
