Stone Soup intern Anya Geist shares her experience of setting up her school literary magazine, The Apricot Journal

February 19, 2021 Preface Stone Soup has been an inspiration to me for a long time, from when I first starting reading it as a ten-year-old, never even considering that I could submit and have the chance to be published, to now, when I have been published in the magazine several times, have attended countless Writing Workshops and Book Clubs, and have been interning with Stone Soup for the better part of a year. Therefore, it is no surprise to me that Stone Soup’s presence in my life certainly played a role in my decision to try and found a literary journal at my high school this past winter. I have learned a lot from

Worcesteria: For many, COVID vaccine still proving elusive

Worcester Magazine IN DEMAND: As demand for the COVID-19 vaccine escalates, we re still hearing stories of people who by all means definitely should be getting vaccinated early having troubles. One story that stuck out came to us from Worcester disability activist Deb Ellstrom, who wrote to tell of her travails trying to get her 87-year-old mother vaccinated at Gillette Stadium. Writes Ellstrom, “What an eye-opener. You can t past the first few screens. Mandatory field for email address? How many 80-and-older people do you know who use email? I entered my e-address, just to move the process along. Then there were the mandatory insurance screens … primary insurance; secondary insurance; other insurance … with all the numbers and member info, including coding numbers. Isn t this vaccine to be distributed free, and without administrative costs? Then: why all this detailed insurance that s only used for billing? Something s up here, and it leaves a foul flavor behind. I called my

Verizon awards grant to Worcester providing internet hotspots to students

Verizon awards grant to Worcester providing internet hotspots to students WORCESTER  School officials Thursday night announced the district had received a new grant from Verizon to provide internet hotspots to students at 11 secondary schools for up to four years. According to the School Department, the telecommunications company, which Worcester contracted with prior to this school year to provide hotspots to thousands of homes, will provide hotspots to any student without reliable internet service at those schools. There was not a monetary amount for the grant available as of Thursday night, however. Access to internet has become one of the major issues facing the district this year as it continues to instruct students remotely at their homes during the pandemic.
