India s Official Covid Numbers May Be Massive Undercount: Actual Deaths Closer to One Million, Say Public Health Experts | Global Indian

Indiaâs official count of 390,000 deaths from Covid may actually be a massive undercount, said several public health experts, according to a June 27 report in The Wall Street Journal. The University of Washingtonâs Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation modeling suggests the true Covid-19 death toll in India exceeds 1.1 million, close to three times the reported number. An accurate count of Covid-19 infections and deaths is âa very important part of understanding how big a threat new variants are,â said Christopher Murray, director of the Washingtonâs Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. India has detected only about 3 to 5 percent of all infections due to insufficient testing, said Murray.

The most recent example is Covid-19, which was first detected in Wuhan, China. Health experts and advocates have directly connected terms like the “China virus” or “Wuhan virus” to the recent increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans,” the SAJA said. The association encouraged journalists to exercise care in their ongoing coverage of the Coronavirus surge in India and said it was available to foster fair and accurate coverage of the South Asian community.
