It’s been nearly a week since MLB Pipeline unveiled its Top 100 Prospects for 2021, and in that time our Pipeline team has already answered many of your questions about the players who made the list.
But the very act of having to rank a finite number of prospects means that we also were forced to make some difficult omissions. And for some fans, finding out which players came close to making the Top 100 can be as interesting as the list itself.
With that in mind, MLB Pipeline has compiled a list of each team’s top prospect who didn’t make the 2021 Top 100. It also serves as a preview for the team Top 30 lists that we’ll be rolling out in March, with each player representing the next-highest-ranked prospect in their respective organization.

After a slow start to the offseason, the pace has picked up in the last two weeks. The 2021 major league roster has come into focus with recent additions and trades, but the team might not be done yet. The Yankees still have some financial flexibility under the luxury tax and a log jam of prospects that could help them swing another trade.
After adding DJ LeMahieu, Corey Kluber, Jameson Taillon, and Darren O’Day over the last two weeks, the Yankees’ roster has experienced some significant turnover. Prior to those deals, the Yankees’ 40-man roster was full, and after the Taillon trade, they were bumping up against the luxury tax threshold. Adam Ottavino was traded to Boston to free up financial space, and soon after, O’Day entered the mix.

As many have pointed out in the course of eulogizing Aaron, to focus only on his prodigious home run total is to do a disservice to his overall career accomplishments. Second base isn t a glamour position. It features the least exciting tools profile, and many of the top second basemen in the big leagues are refugees from other positions, often shortstop.
In the first 43 years of the Draft, just 11 second basemen were selected in the first round, and only one went in the top five picks. Yet a dozen have become first-round choices in the past 13 Drafts, including three in 2020: Nick Gonzales (Pirates), Justin Foscue (Rangers) and Nick Yorke (Red Sox).
All three of them claim spots on our updated Top 10 Second Base Prospects list, along with fellow first-rounders Nick Madrigal (White Sox, 2018) and Michael Busch (Dodgers, 2019).
