As increasingly frequent and intense storms batter the Ocean State’s weary coast, the consequences, such as eroding beaches, flooded homes, compromised public streets and threatened infrastructure, become more common. While efforts to mitigate these impacts are underway along Rhode Island’s 400-plus miles of coastline, municipalities must balance loss with timing and limited money. Twenty-one major natural disasters between 1938 and 2015, including the “Great New England Hurricane” of 83 years ago, punished this Washington County coastal community, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation to be Established at UMass Amherst Through Gift from Alumni Michael and Theresa Hluchyj

May 3, 2021 AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Amherst has received a $1 million gift from two alumni to create a new center that will forge new collaborations between nurses and engineers, bringing together two fields that can improve personal well-being and save lives. Committing $1 million in seed funding to help establish the Center for Nursing and Engineering Innovation, Michael ’76 and Theresa (Murphy) ’77 Hluchyj hope the center will be a place where nurses and engineers can collaborate on clinical solutions in new ways. “We are excited to support UMass in this new initiative,” says Michael Hluchyj. “Innovation is often accelerated at the intersection of different academic disciplines. The worldwide health crises resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic make clear the critical need for innovative solutions in clinical settings where both nursing and engineering play vital roles.”

Theresa Sherrin named 2021 Woman of Distinction by West Orange County Republican Women Federated

During their April meeting, West Orange County Republican Women Federated surprised long-time member Theresa Sherrin with the club’s 2021 woman of distinction award. The “Mindy Yatsui Woman of Distinction Award,” named after a beloved member who always volunteered and kept her beautiful smile even through difficult battles against cancer, is given only when a member deserves its special recognition. Theresa Sherrin (seated) was recognized as their 2021 Woman of Distinction by West Orange County Republican Women Federated.
