Leaders Need to Hold the Line With Empathy

Leaders Need to Hold the Line With Empathy I’ll never forget seeing their shocked faces as I explained our mission to a “voluntold” pickup team: to hold defensive positions on our base long enough for everyone to evacuate our C-130 airlift aircraft if we were overrun by enemy forces. Clearly, if things got to where anyone was counting on us to hold the line, the situation had spiraled downward. We were far more adept at wielding wrenches and typewriters than weapons. “Wait, that means we could be left behind?” someone asked. How in the world was I going to motivate this team to hold the line? I was fresh out of college and a new officer. Where could I go from here?

MOV Parent: Willing and able, aware and care | News, Sports, Jobs

editorial@newsandsentinel.com In the dark comedy movie “Downhill,” a vacationing family faces imminent threat from an avalanche. The crisis of the story occurs when Will Farrell’s character Pete runs away right when his wife and family needed him the most. The rest of the movie entails Pete trying to regain his family’s trust and heal the rift in his marriage. It’s not really a funny movie in my opinion, but it does illustrate how marriages can experience a symbolic “avalanche” of stress. The story illustrates how difficult it can be to heal and forgive when we’ve been hurt and abandoned by those on whom we rely and trust. This is especially true if we think our mate was able to be there for us, but was unwilling to come to our aid.
