Philadelphia Historical Commission staff recently has processed an increasing number of historic district nominations. Pending nominations include the Automobile Row Thematic Historic District (29 properties on North Broad Street), Central Mount Airy Commercial Historic District (47 properties), Carnegie Library Thematic Historic District, French Village Historic District (24 properties in West Mount Airy), and 3611-31 Spring Garden Street Historic District.
Residents ‘getting swarmed’ by illegal ATVs, street bikes prompts emergency meeting with city leaders
PHILADELPHIA (KYW) An emergency meeting was held virtually Wednesday evening to address what community leaders are calling “escalating safety issues” caused by illegal ATVs and street bikes.
“People are scared. They are getting swarmed,” said Eleanor Ingersoll, president of Queen Village Neighbors Association and host of the evening’s forum. “They are going out to eat, they don’t feel safe.”
The immediate need for the discussion was attributed to street chaos that took place on Wednesday, April 28, specifically in the residential areas around South Street, but residents citywide say the disturbance is constant.

During the day, the 1500 block of Sansom looks like an outdoor festival frozen midway through setup popup tents and police-style barricades are mixed in with wooden sheds custom built for outdoor dining.
By night, it’s one of Philadelphia’s biggest successes in an experiment with converting conventional city blocks into “streeteries,” or outdoor dining areas burnished by the closure of parking or traffic lanes. The experiment has attracted throngs of diners and bargoers and sustained restaurants and bars hit by the pandemic.
The Philadelphia Streets Department is beginning a project to improving bike safety across the city. The start of the project comes days after a female bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle near the Philadelphia Art Museum.
