Local restaurants and bars are putting their best foot forward after they were permitted to open for indoor dining by The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services on Monday, Feb. 1. While many are ready to be back in restaurants there are still heavy restrictions that need to be followed.
Under the newest order implemented on Feb. 1, restaurants and bars will have to operate at 25 percent capacity, groups will be separated by at least 6 feet, masks must be worn unless eating or drinking, there can be no more than six people at a table and closing time must be before 10 p.m.
Council Honors Rice For 46 Years Of Service
Sedalia City Council met Tuesday night after observing MLK Day on Monday, during which all City offices were closed.
The first item on the agenda was to honor the service of John Rice, who retired after working for the City of Sedalia for 46 years and two weeks, first as a Sedalia Police Officer, then serving in the IT Department starting in 2011.
Jeffrey McKinney retired after serving 10 years, 9 ½ months in the Street Department. He was not present Tuesday night.
A presentation from City Finance Director Dawn Jennings noted that the City is on track with collections, with use taxes up significantly by 6.5 percent. Franchise tax collections are up 12 percent, while transportation tax collections are down. However, property tax is up 17 percent over 2019, Jennings said.
Any other year, the outdoor dining season would have officially ended by now. But with COVID-19 cases on the rise, many diners are still keeping advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in mind when it comes to restaurant visits.
The public health organization has said drive-thru and take-out are the lowest risk options, followed by places with outdoor seating and tables spaced at least 6 feet apart.
With January and February ahead, many restaurateurs across the country are looking to lessons learned in colder climates, like offering more hot cocktails or adding igloos, otherwise known as pop-up dining domes.
