PORTLAND, Ore Police declared a riot outside the federal courthouse in downtown Portland on New Year s Eve.
People started gathering near the courthouse at Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Main Street around 7:45 p.m. The crowd grew to an estimated 80-100 people, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

“My good faith efforts at de-escalation have been met with ongoing violence and even scorn from radical Antifa and anarchists,” Ted Wheeler said during a press briefing on Jan. 1. “In response, it will be necessary to use additional tools and to push the limits of the tools we already have to bring the criminal destruction and violence to an end.”

Police in Portland, Oregon declared a riot early on Friday as a gathering in the city s downtown became violent. People were ordered to leave the area or face arrest and the possible use of force. A gathering in downtown Portland has devolved into a riot, Portland Police said via their verified Twitter account. Participants have thrown multiple firebombs at officers and launched commercial grade fireworks at the Federal Courthouse and Justice Center. The violence from the crowd has prompted a declaration of a riot. All persons in the area of Southwest 3rd Avenue around Southwest Main Street are ordered to leave to the south and west immediately.

A RIOT was declared in Portland last night after a New Year s Eve gathering turned violent.
Police shared pictures of the trash-strewn streets and said they were pelted with fireworks and Molotov-style cocktails.

They retaliated with tear gas and pepper spray after declaring the incident an unlawful gathering around 10.30pm, before later declaring it a riot.
