After he filed for unemployment benefits, it took six months for him to get through an adjudication process to receive the claims he was owed. He said he has yet to see any additional payments since receiving that money in February. Even then, with a wife who has pressing medical needs, the money hasn’t been enough to make ends meet.

Siding With Landlords, Federal Judge Tosses Out CDC s Eviction Moratorium

(© FlaglerLive) In a decision that could upend the residential rental market nationwide, a U.S. District Court judge ruled Wednesday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention exceeded its powers when it stopped evictions last fall. The U.S. Justice Department quickly announced it would appeal the ruling, and the judge agreed to temporarily leave the eviction moratorium in place while both sides file arguments. The ruling did not address state or local ordinances, many of which have also temporarily stopped renters from being tossed out of their homes for nonpayment. Some of those orders already have expired.

The group s stated mission is to achieve justice and improve the lives of low-income people through civil legal aid, policy advocacy and community legal education.  The Courier and Daily Comet asked Laura Tuggle, executive director of the group, to tell us about her organization. These are the edited answers to our questions. What specific services do you provide?  Our Houma office serves Assumption, Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes providing free legal representation in civil legal matters to eligible low-income people living in those parishes. We have limited special grants and may be able to serve the legal needs of people aged 60 or older even if they are not low-income.

She called Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma in a panic. Eric Hallett, the attorney on the phone, instructed her to grab important documents and medicine. There was a chance she wouldn’t be allowed to return. The woman and her partner who lived in the home with five children, ranging in age from 1 to 17 had thought they were going to be able to stay.
