For many high school seniors, deciding to go to college is one of the biggest decisions they’ll have to make. The Blue Heart Foundation says celebrating that decision for young men in South East San Diego is the first step in their bright futures.

My mom, Francine Maxwell, has been an active community member in Southeastern San Diego specifically in Encanto for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories of her commitment to our community are when she was Encanto Little League president. I remember late night meetings being held at the rec center at 7 o’clock, which, mind you, was extremely late for a 7-year-old, and early mornings sometimes as early as 7 a.m., very early for a 7-year-old, making sure the snack stand was stocked and the field was chalked. My mom worked tirelessly to make each baseball weekend an experience for the whole family.
