Fort Caroline Middle moving online due to ‘multiple cases of COVID-19′

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Citing “multiple cases of COVID-19,″ Fort Caroline Middle School is transitioning entirely to online learning through Duval HomeRoom beginning Thursday, according to a news release from the Duval County School District.
The school plans to stay online through Monday. Additionally, there will be no after school activities or other extracurricular events through Monday.
A message sent to families of students from Principal Chelvert Wellington states that the school will be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. He said the Department of Health will contact students and staff personally if there is a need for someone to quarantine for a longer period.

Students protest, call for more Black history in Duval County schools

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Some Duval County students used their day off Monday to protest outside the school district’s headquarters on the Southbank. The protest is continued to fall out from You Matter Month, a campaign aimed at raising awareness for mental health.
Dozens of students and other activists gathered outside the main office of Duval County Public Schools Monday afternoon calling for more emphasis on Black history in schools and more input from Black students.

The Duval County School Board is facing a lawsuit by a parent who says their daughter was sexually assaulted by a fellow student inside a Jacksonville high school.
Duval County School officials encourage pandemic protocols for winter break

In an email sent to parents yesterday, the director wrote,
“For the first half of the school year, your children have done a remarkable job adhering to the protocols in place for health and safety in the school setting. Those protocols will still be in place when we return to school in January.”
Duval Schools is encouraging families to practice the same protocols during winter break. The district’s health director asked parents to report any positive tests during the break to the Department of Health.
Since the first day of class on August 20, the district has reported 732 cases. 504 were students and 228 were staff. The majority of people who’ve tested positive were at elementary and high schools.
