Professor Mathai Varghese FAA
The University of Adelaide’s Professor Mathai Varghese FAA has been awarded the prestigious Hannan Medal by the Australian Academy of Science for his career-long outstanding contributions in the field of geometric analysis.
Professor Varghese is Elder Professor of Mathematics and Australian Laureate Fellow in the School of Mathematical Sciences. Since 2009, he has been Director of the Institute for Geometry and its Applications at Adelaide. Since joining the University of Adelaide in 1989 he has held various ARC Postdoctoral positions and was appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics in 2006 and the Elder Chair in Mathematics in 2013. He completed his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986 and was a postdoctoral researcher (Dickson Instructor) at the University of Chicago.

Due to Covid-19, the class of 2020 were assisted in WhatsApp lessons.
A non-profit organisation which has been providing supplementary Maths support to high school pupils has helped its Diepsloot Class of 2020 achieve a 100% pass rate for Maths.
OLICO said that in assisting the class of 2020 to cope throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, it shifted to online WhatsApp lessons after supporters of the organisation donated data and devices to assist pupils.
OLICO’s Mathematics coordinator Dr Lynn Bowie said the results of the OLICO matriculants had reinforced the importance of ensuring there was a good solid foundation in Mathematics.

A LEAFLET FROM three fringe political parties in Ireland has made a number of misleading and false claims about lockdowns and the pandemic.
The two-sided leaflet which was sent to some households in Dublin over the past few months was released by Renua, the Irish Freedom Party and Direct Democracy Ireland.
All three are registered political parties but none have elected representatives at any level.
