Thank you very much indeed Mr. President and I want to Jeanine, the SRSG, for her really insightful briefing this morning. Thank you Jeanine. Also, I want to welcome the representative of Iraq amongst us today.
I would like to begin by extending our deepest condolences to the people of Iraq following the tragic fire at Ibn al-Khatib Hospital in April. This was a terrible tragedy, and it came at a time when we know the Iraqi people are facing devastating effects of COVID-19. Our thoughts and our prayers are certainly with the families of the victims and of all those affected by the tragedy.

Thank you Mr President and thank you Karim for your report and briefing today. Before I begin my statement, and as this is your last briefing to the Council in this role, I want to take the opportunity to acknowledge your service and leadership, Karim, over the past three years.
I would also like to thank Nadia Murad for her powerful briefing this morning. As she did when she advocated for the creation of UNITAD , you again eloquently set out the very real need that survivors of ISIL’s crimes, in getting for justice and accountability. This is the reason we really must ensure that evidence of atrocity crimes is preserved and your courageous testimony today is central to that task.

Thank you very much, Mr. President and like others I want to wish you well at the beginning of your Presidency and also to thank again our Vietnamese colleagues for the excellent month we have just concluded.
Mr. President this is the first time that Irelands has actually had an opportunity as a new member to address this issue Bosnia and Herzegovina discussion, so I want to begin by underlining our strong support for a single, sovereign, united and multi-ethnic Bosnia and Herzegovina. I also want at the start of course to express our support for the Office of the High Representative and EUFOR Althea in which Ireland is proud to participate.

Mr. President, given that this meeting combines both political and humanitarian agenda items, I will now briefly say a few words in my national capacity about the political situation.
We note with regret and disappointment the lack of substantive engagement by the Syrian authorities in the work of the Constitutional Committee to date, and hope that the response you referred to this morning Geir is a positive one. Despite your intense efforts so far, intransigence continues to frustrate the possibilities for real progress at the Committee. The results of the Committee’s work continue to fall far short of the legitimate expectations of all the Syrian people.

And I want to Thank you Under-Secretary-General Mr. Jean Pierre Lacroix and Special Envoy for your briefings this morning.
Ireland welcomes the continued improvement in bilateral relations between Sudan and South Sudan. South Sudan’s contribution to the conclusion of the Juba Peace Agreement was a welcome recent bright spot in a turbulent period for the region, and it is evidence also of how good relations between South Sudan and Sudan can contribute to peace and security in the Horn. I very much welcome that both representatives of both countries are here with us today. And I also want to welcome Ambassador Taye of Ethiopia amongst us.
