Sarpatta Parambarai Review | Sarpatta Parambarai Tamil Movie Review by Sreejith Mullappilly

Jul 22, 2021 By Sreejith Mullappilly Most boxing dramas are generic, but Pa. Ranjith s Sarpatta Parambarai seldom seems like one. It is as much a film about cast and rivalries between boxing clans in old Madras as it is about the game of boxing. In a scene that comes an hour into the film, Pasupathy s Rangan Vaathiyar tells his disciple that the boxing clan of Madras once split into multiple clans, and that the Idiyappa clan now dominates his Sarpatta Parambarai. The coach also says that winning against Idiyappa Parambarai is a matter of pride for his Sarpatta clan. Arya s character Kabilan is a blue-collar worker in Madras. At the start of the film, we see him being treated like a slave, as he awaits the end of his shift so that he could watch a boxing match involving his Sarpatta clan. As Kabilan hurries off to the match venue, we get the impression that he is going there to fight in the ring. But he is going to the ringside as a spectator; even there, he is treated

Sarpatta Parambarai, which deals with the sport of boxing, is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, and has fans excited ever since the people got to witness the epic transformation Arya went through for his character in the film. Does the film live up to its hype? Well, here you go!  STORY: Sarpatta Parambarai, once an esteemed clan, full of champions, is now a completely hopeless team, that constantly loses to Idiyappa Parambarai, the traditional rival team. Kabilan (Arya) comes forward and expresses his interest to fight against Vembuli (John Kokken), the star fighter of Idiyappa Parambarai. Though initially ignored, Kabilan earns the support and trust of Rangan (Pasupathi), the coach of Sarpatta Parambarai, after winning a few local matches. From thereon, the entire film focusses on the final epic fight between K

Sarpatta Parambarai review: Uppercuts and guts as boxers battle for victory and honour

Close on the heels of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s boxing drama Toofan comes another movie about a pugilist battling rivals within the ring and demons without. Pa Ranjith’s Sarpatta Parambarai shares with Toofan a streaming platform (Amazon Prime Video), heroes from historically marginalised communities (a Dalit in the Tamil movie, a Muslim in the Hindi production) and a lodestar in the form of Muhammed Ali. While the American legend inspires Toofan’s Aziz Ali to put on his gloves, his bold political activism beyond the boxing arena hangs over Sarpatta Parambarai. Ranjith sets a routine story against the backdrop of the Emergency in 1975 and amidst Dalit assertion in Tamil Nadu. Photographs and murals of BR Ambedkar adorn the background, while the boxing matches themselves take on the quality of a crucial election that must be won at any cost.
