The year 2020 began with much fanfare and trumpets for Malayalam cinema. There was a growing interest over the industry, which was getting noticed for its cinematic excellence and narrative choices.
The pandemic, however, dealt a heavy blow to the entertainment industry with the nationwide lockdown in March. Looking at the bright side, here are a few dominant trends that emerged in Malayalam cinema, despite a raging pandemic and the devastating losses suffered by scores of workers, who had to remain without work as the arc lights were turned off.

Is there anyone not singing or dancing to the quirky tunes of Kim Kim Kim? The song was rendered by Manju Warrier for Santosh Sivan’s Jack N’ Jill and has been going viral - receiving 2.5 million hits and counting - since the lyrical video was released recently. The actor had started a “challenge” on social media inviting children to dance to the song, saying, “When the times are tough, take a break, shake off the stress and share the fun”. She had also posted a video of herself showing some dance movements to the song.
Well, the fun has spread out of Kerala shores. Manju Warrier, who had said she had great fun while recording and shooting the song, shared a video of a group of boys and girls from Kenya dancing to the song, and the moves definitely have a Kenyan twist. The latest ‘challenge’ making rounds on the internet is the Kim Kim challenge, and Malayalam actress Manju Warrier, who kick-started the dance challenge as part of promotions for her upcoming film ‘Jack and Jill’, said she is overwhelmed by the response.
