Applications Still Open For New Program To Educate Young Tulsans On Political Process A new program through the Tulsa Regional Chamber’s TYPROS called 918 Lead is still accepting applications for a couple more days. 918 Lead is designed to educate young Tulsans about the political process and running for public office. Organizers told News On 6 the program is cut into a four-month, nine-session boot camp that will take place virtually on Friday’s. Participants will learn about public office, including campaigning and fundraising. Guest speakers with firsthand knowledge of elections and campaigning will be brought in from both the state and local levels. Organizers said Oklahoma Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell is scheduled to speak during one of the sessions.

Diverse, Equitable, Inclusive Initiatives Top Of Mind For 2021 Tulsa Regional Chamber Chair

The Tulsa Regional Chamber held a virtual inauguration Thursday for its 2021 chair. Tulsa Economic Development Corporation CEO Rose Washington is the chamber’s first Black chair. In a recorded address, Washington said her priorities are rooted in improving diversity, equity and inclusivity, and her first area of focus is helping people. The unemployment rate for Black Tulsans is more than double that for white Tulsans. Washington said the answer is improving access to job training and educational opportunities, starting before high school graduation. Thanks to my high school teacher, I interned in a local city clerk’s office instead of cutting tall grass in public spaces. I believe that opportunity at the Durant, Mississippi, city hall put me on the path that has led me here today, Washington said.

Innovation Hubs OK Catalyst Programs Honored by U.S. Small Business Administration January 14, 2021 The U.S. Small Business Administration is recognizing the Oklahoma Catalyst Programs (OK Catalyst), based at the University of Oklahoma’s Tom Love Innovation Hub (I-Hub), and Executive Director Tom Wavering with two prestigious 2020 Tibbetts Awards. OU is the first university in the nation to receive two Tibbetts Awards in the same year. The Tibbetts Awards are presented annually to small businesses, organizations and individuals who exemplify the spirit and intent of the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer programs (SBIR/STTR), which encourage domestic small businesses to engage in federal research and research and development with the potential for commercialization. 

Chili Bowl Races Start Up Despite Pandemic

Races for the 35th Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals start tonight at the River Spirit Expo Center at Expo Square. The midget car event attracts racers and thousands of fans from across the U.S., but this year, it’s being held amid a global pandemic in which thousands of Oklahomans are falling ill and hundreds are dying every week. Tulsa County Commissioner Karen Keith said founder Emmett Hahn has committed to holding the event as safely as possible. Attendees at the Chili Bowl will be 25% of capacity. That’s 25% of who normally goes in for this event, and strict COVID protocols will be followed at all the events, Keith said.
