New report calls for comprehensive smoke-free policies

New report calls for comprehensive smoke-free policies A new WHO report, Tobacco Control To Improve Child Health And Development, calls for raising awareness among practitioners and policymakers about the importance of strong tobacco control measures for protecting the health and development of children, including banning tobacco advertising, implementing 100% smoke-free environments and raising taxes on tobacco. Exposure to tobacco smoke has devastating impacts throughout childhood and adolescence, starting from conception. Exposure of unborn children to maternal smoking or second-hand smoke is linked to birth defects, stillbirths, preterm births and infant deaths. Maternal smoking during pregnancy is linked to a doubling of the risk of sudden infant death and birth defects, while exposure to second-hand smoke during pregnancy is linked to a 23% increased risk of stillbirth and 13% increased risk of congenital malformation.

Death rate for N.J. Black women after pregnancy is among nation's worst. Tammy Murphy has ideas to change that.

Death rate for N.J. Black women after pregnancy is among nation’s worst. Tammy Murphy has ideas to change that. Updated Jan 25, 2021; Ajanee McConnell complained the pain was severe and persistent, yet her obstetrician assured her that prenatal discomfort was normal and her unborn son would be fine. McConnell said she “suppressed her intuition” and forged ahead. But 19 weeks into her pregnancy, she went into labor. Her son died three days after he was delivered by emergency cesarean section two years ago, McDonnell tearfully told an online audience of 700 on Monday. “I share my story so that other young Black mothers know that their voices deserve to be heard and when you think something is wrong, don’t let anyone silence you,” said McConnell, 23, of Parsippany.

Study: Over 142 million people aged 60 years are unable to meet their basic daily needs

Study: Over 142 million people aged 60 years are unable to meet their basic daily needs At least 14% of all people aged 60 years and over  ̶  more than 142 million people  ̶  are currently unable to meet all their basic daily needs according to the Baseline report for the Decade of Healthy Ageing, released by the World Health Organization today. The Baseline report brings together data available for measuring healthy ageing, defined by WHO as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. Optimizing functional ability is the goal of the Decade of Healthy Ageing, which begins in 2021 and addresses five interrelated abilities that all older people should enjoy: the ability to meet basic needs; to continue to learn and make decisions; to be mobile; to build and maintain relationships; and to contribute to society.
