Attorney General Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas to tout anti-domestic terror efforts
Attorney General Merrick Garland and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas will tout the Biden administration’s approach to fighting domestic terrorism at a hearing Wednesday in front of a Congress still debating the cause of the January 6 US Capitol riot.
“In our country, espousing an extremist ideology is not a crime nor is expressing hateful views or associating with hateful groups,” Garland told the Senate Appropriations Committee. “But when someone tries to promote or impose an ideology through acts of violence, those acts can be the most dangerous crimes we confront as a society.”

The Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday dedicated an arm of its intelligence division to target domestic terrorism and opened a new center to help state and local law enforcement combat violent extremists, the latest Biden administration efforts on the problem in the wake of the Jan. 6 siege on the Capitol.
The department said the moves were part of a strategy to “comprehensively combat domestic violent extremism, including violent white supremacy.”
Average time for unaccompanied children in CBP custody down more than 75%
Unaccompanied migrant children now spend an average of around 24 hours in Border Patrol custody, a Biden administration official said Thursday, down from the more than 100 hours that CNN reported in March.
US law permits children to remain in these jail-like border facilities for only 72 hours before being transferred to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Another official said it is a sign that the Biden administration’s efforts have led to a “dramatic turnaround” for the situation of unaccompanied children at the border. The Biden administration officials spoke on background with reporters during a virtual news conference.

The Department of Homeland Security on Monday shared more images from inside the migrant facility in Donna.
What was once a facility overflowing with unaccompanied migrant children barely a month ago is now almost empty.
In March, U.S. Customs and Border Protection had a high of almost 6,000 kids in custody. On May 1, CBP reported they had less than 700 kids in custody
DHS touted the reduction of children in custody to the opening of 14 facilities with FEMA assistance since March 13, as well as more than 350 caseworkers trained and mobilized to help place the children with a verified family member.
