THURSDAY on The Source Decades after her death, Tejano star Selena is still an icon. Her influence and lasting legacy has become almost mythic among communities that hold her most dear, especially in Texas.
Selena rose to stardom in the 90s and her tragic murder in 1995 shocked millions. She was inducted into the Billboard Latin Music Hall of Fame that same year.
At the time of her death, the singer had released 11 albums six with her band Selena y Los Dinos and five without and was Billboard s top-selling Latin artist of the 1990s decade. The outlet also named her the top female artist of Greatest of All Time Latin Artists in 2020.
A number of Oakland community leaders and activists are calling for removing the Oakland Unified School District’s state-imposed trustee and the semi-private Fiscal Crisis Management and Assistance Team (FCMAT), which are enforcing a regime of austerity budgets and the closure of flatland, neighborhood public schools.
The state trustee, Chris Learned, recently came to a public school board meeting to say he would “stay” or rescind a school board decision if the board went ahead with a vote to halt the closing of schools in predominately Black neighborhoods. In the face of the threat, the board majority withdrew the disputed language.

People and organizations often tell stories using maps. Many use the technology of a geographic information system to gather and store crucial mappable data, process it and, most importantly, display the information in a way that can be easily understood. Sometimes the result is an actual story map, but often GIS produces maps and dashboards that allow stories to emerge from the visuals. The data reflects real people and the way community conditions affect their lived experiences. The maps are therefore useful ways to distill many individual stories into one (or more) overarching narrative.

Calls for social justice were amplified in 2020 following the police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other men and women of color many of them unarmed.
Last year’s racial awakening has since transitioned into legislation after House lawmakers on March 3 passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The bill now moves to the upper chamber, where Senate Democrats must garner the support of at least 10 of their Republican colleagues.

Three years ago Oakland sounded an alarm when we learned of a secret operation by President Donald Trump to attempt mass deportations of immigrants from our community. I knew the impending ICE raid on our city would have undoubtedly torn parents away from children, husbands away from wives.
