MSU turf students expand skills through spring internships

Despite COVID-19 constraints, students receive in-person experience during the spring 2021 semester at golf courses around the country while taking online classes.

Presented with the unique challenges caused by COVID-19, Michigan State University turf faculty in the Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences (PSM) and the Institute of Agricultural Technology (IAT) collaborated on a solution that could potentially benefit students, alumni and the golf industry.

Agriculture and farming are a couple of the most important industries in the United States. However, these industries use large amounts of resources, produce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions and use a lot of water. Studies are being done today to find solutions to these problems.
Lindsey Slaughter is an assistant professor of soil microbial ecology and biochemistry in the Department of Plant and Soil Science. Slaughter discussed two big production practices that she is looking into.
âThe two biggest production practices here in this region of West Texas are cotton production and cattle production,â Slaughter said. âOf the two of those, cattle production has a range land environment that is perennial and that is beneficial for the soil compared to the intensively farmed crops.â
Stanford study lists NMSU professors among top 2% worldwide for research citations

LAS CRUCES - New Mexico State University professors in a number of fields including chemistry and biochemistry, physics, psychology, agriculture and engineering have been listed in a worldwide database of top scientists created by Stanford University and recently published in the journal Public Library of Science Biology.
The Stanford study measured scientists’ career-long citation impact up until the end of 2019 and separately for citation impact during the single calendar year of 2019. It lists the top 100,000 scientists in all fields and includes those who are not in the top 100,000 of all research disciplines, but are within the top 2% of scientists of their main subfield discipline.

Recent MSU grad Hans Bierlein had an internship with Michigan Sugar Co. during his time as a crop and soil sciences undergrad.
Many of the people Hans Bierlein knows in the agricultural industry attended Michigan State University (MSU). So, when Bierlein decided to pursue an education in crop and soil sciences based on his family farm experiences, MSU’s reputation and location made it a clear standout.
