Mayor Walsh awards more than $38 million to nonprofit organizations providing services to homeless individuals

Mayor Martin J. Walsh announced today the City of Boston has received more than $38 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to be distributed among 17 nonprofit organizations that provide critical services and support to Boston’s unsheltered residents. This funding represents the largest Continuum of Care award that the City has received.

City Councilor: Boston Is Leaving Millions In Housing Dollars On The Table

The city of Boston could be leaving tens of millions in federal housing dollars on the table each year and one city councilor wants to change that. Councilor Kenzie Bok an affordable housing expert whose district includes Beacon Hill and Fenway   says if Boston could find a way to build 2,500 more affordable housing units, the feds would have to foot the rent. I think people have gotten used to the idea that we don t add public housing units, we only lose them, Bok said. And it just doesn t have to be true. While Boston may be eligible for far more housing dollars than it currently receives, it s the city that has to figure out how to build the subsidy-eligible units.

This February update focuses on our ongoing work: housing our homeless neighbors, creating new affordable housing, assisting renters, managing the City’s tax-foreclosed real estate portfolio, and helping Bostonians buy and maintain their homes. Ending Homelessness On January 27, Mayor Walsh and census volunteers participated in the City s 41st annual street count of those experiencing homelessness. The street count is part of the comprehensive census of homeless adults and families in emergency shelters, transitional housing, and domestic violence programs, and individuals staying outside in Boston each year. Census organizers intentionally reduced the number of volunteers this year as a safety measure in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The street count also started later and did not include the usual kickoff event at City Hall in order to prevent volunteers from gathering as a large group.

42% increase in development Linkage fees proposed to support affordable housing, workforce training

Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced a 42 percent increase in the Linkage fees collected by large scale commercial developments over 100,000 square feet in Boston to support the creation of affordable housing and workforce development programs. The increased rate of $15.39 per square foot, of which $13.00 will be dedicated to affordable housing and $2.39 will be dedicated to workforce training, will be brought to the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) Board for approval on Thursday, February 11.
