Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney is currently the target of former President Donald Trump and the pro-Trump Republicans in Congress. As Trump floats a possible 2024 presidential run, Cheney did not rule out a possible bid only to thwart the former president in a recent interview.
In an interview with the Today Show on NBC, Cheney was pressed three times on whether she would launch her own presidential bid to obstruct the former president’s possible plan for 2024. While she did not directly say that she would, she did not dismiss the suggestion. The Wyoming Congresswoman, however, said that the former president’s hold on the Republican party is one of the biggest issues in the country today.
She said Mr. Trump, who refused to accept the election outcome and the rejection of his ballot fraud claims by more than 60 courts, was undermining democracy and the Constitution.
“Those who refuse to accept the rulings of our courts are at war with the Constitution,” said Ms. Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney and a rising star in the GOP until she crossed Mr. Trump.
“Our duty is clear. Every one of us who has sworn the oath must act to prevent the unraveling of our democracy. This is not about policy. This is not about partisanship. This is about our duty as Americans. Remaining silent, and ignoring the lie, emboldens the liar,” she said.
According to CBS DFW, the rising Illinois politician has been working tirelessly to connect with like-minded Republican leaders and lawmakers who see the potential, long-term impact of Trump s rhetoric and actions. During his two-day visit to the Lone Star State, Kinzinger spent time with Bush on his first day, and on the second day, he sat down with Michael Wood, a known anti-Trump Republican pundit.
Since the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, Kinzinger has become one of the most vocal anti-Trump Republicans in Congress. The publication reports that Kinzinger has relatively high hopes for Wood advancing in an upcoming runoff election.
