Iran s Zarif calls on Japan, EU to persuade U.S. to lift sanctions By Mohammad Gharebagh, KYODO NEWS - Feb 15, 2021 - 22:25 | World, All
Iran s foreign minister has said he hopes Japan and the European Union will persuade newly inaugurated U.S. President Joe Biden to lift crippling economic sanctions imposed on Tehran by his predecessor Donald Trump.
Mohammad Javad Zarif s remarks in an interview with Kyodo News on Sunday appear aimed at speeding up the decision of the Biden administration, which intends to return to the 2015 nuclear deal and to resume dialogue with Iran.
Calling Japan an old friend of Iran and noting its good relations with the United States, he said, We expect Japan to act as a friend, particularly when it comes to international law suggesting that sanctions reimposed after Washington left the landmark nuclear deal in 2018 are illegal.

Thus the current jockeying for position and leverage seen coming from Tehran and Washington. Drop the Trump sanctions and we’ll quickly get back to full compliance with the nuclear deal, says Iran. Get back to full compliance and we’ll drop the sanctions and re-enter the nuclear deal, says the US.
