President Joe Biden wants to place more restrictions on the purchase of guns through executive actions, but gun rights activists say he has little power.
Biden has asked the U.S. Department of Justice to issue a ruling to stamp out the proliferation of “ghost guns,” which are self-assembled guns that often come from 3D printed parts and are devoid of serial numbers for tracking.
He also suggested the Justice Department make a rule to further regulate stabilizing braces, an accessory that can increase accuracy and make a handgun operate more like an automatic weapon. A stabilizing brace was used in the March shooting in Colorado.
Black Americans flock to gun stores and clubs: ‘I needed to protect myself’

Janice Matthews always knew she would be a gun owner someday. She was raised in Alabama where her family members rarely left their home unarmed. Still, after more than three decades in California she was not in a rush to start shopping around at gun stores. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Matthews started hearing rumors of food shortages and noticed store shelves emptied by shoppers panic-buying everything from bullets to toilet paper. After her daughter moved out of their home, she was left with an empty nest and a lot of anxiety.

Americans are arming themselves with guns at a record pace, especially Black Americans, whose gun ownership jumped 58.2% in 2020.
According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), Black Americans are running to the gun store to purchase firearms. Black Americans have a number of reasons for purchasing guns and according to
The Guardian, they include stress from the pandemic, the resurgence of mass shootings, and armed white protestors rallying against lockdown orders and in support of White supremacy.
Even when purchasing a firearm, many Black Americans experience racism of prejudice from white gun store owners. That has pushed many Black Americans to join Black gun clubs or seek training from Black gun instructors.
"These courses are aimed in particular at young black women, who are statistically the most targeted by crime," explains Themba Kubheka, from the GOSA association. "Every woman here knows a woman who has been raped, robbed, beaten. Each one has a story about violence in this country".

It didn’t work after mass shootings at a nightclub in Orlando, college campuses in Virginia and Oregon, a church in Charleston, or at a movie theater and high school in Colorado. Or after two lawmakers survived assassination attempts. But after a gunman killed 58 people and wounded more than 500 at a Las Vegas concert, Democrats are going to try again to revamp the nation’s gun laws.
