3. SOUNDBITE (English) Marcus Prior, Deputy Country Director in Myanmar, World Food Programme (WFP):
“It has been a very difficult few months for many people. It’s true that there has been significant out migration from Yangon in particular, but also that many of the factories are currently closed or operating at a very low level, that the port is operating at a very low level as well; and the banking system is semi-paralyzed, and it’s not uncommon to see people queuing in long queues simply to have access to cash. And this is also having an impact on people’s ability to transfer cash through money transfers both within Myanmar and coming into Myanmar from abroad. So, this all added up to a situation of real concern and one where WFP has estimated that over the next six months as many as 3.4 million could fall into worrying stages
