Happy Gilmore Is Adam Sandler s Best Comedy
On its 25th anniversary, we look back at an early Sandler hit that is not only full of great performances and memorable lines, but also changed the way we enjoy golf.
After finishing up a successful stint on
SNL in 1995, Adam Sandler launched head first into a movie career that is still going strong in its third decade. One of the earliest entries in the Sandler catalog is the golf comedy
Happy Gilmore, about a wannabe hockey player who finds unexpected success as a professional golfer. And even though it’s just one in a long line of fish-out-of-water comedies that define the early part of Sandler’s big-screen career, the film ultimately changed the face of sports movies or at the very least, the sport of golf and has attracted a legion of fans unlike any of this other comedies.
With the home stretch just about in sight for
WandaVision, the MCU s first TV show is doubling down on the weirdness and witchcraft with this very special Halloween-themed episode in which Wanda gets to know an unfamiliar face from her past, Vision turns detective, and Darcy becomes perilously close to becoming the first character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to say the F-word.
And, naturally, Team Empire (Chris Hewitt, Ben Travis, Helen O Hara, and James Dyer) is on hand to talk about the episode in depth, and answer your questions. As best as they can. Which isn t very well, let s be honest. But they do natter about the latest theories, exchange some harebrained thoughts of their own, and Chris overshares.

St Jerome in His Study by Antonello da Messina
‘Antonello da Messina is often credited with introducing painting in oils to Italy and was a pioneer in the use of linear perspective. But it is the exquisite detail evident in every part of the painting that, for me, makes this work so special. You can study it for hours and still spot something new.
‘St Jerome is generally regarded as the most learned of the Four Fathers of the Early Church. His great achievement was translating the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin, thus making the foundation of our Christian faith accessible to all in the early Church.’
