THE Zimbabwe Constitutional Amendment Bill (Number 2), which scraps the running mate in the supreme law and gives the president power to appoint judges, sailed through Senate today.
Sixty-five senators, including at least five from the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, voted for the Bill that was opposed by 10 legislators.
Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi described the passage of the bill as “historic” while critics and some lawmakers called it a disastrous moment for Zimbabwe.
According to the Senate Hansard, he said, “… Historic in the sense that we debated, we came together and voted for a national cause. Historic in that we also were not fixated by the fact that we did a good job in 2013 but we also noticed some errors in that particular Constitution that did not allow us to come up with appropriate legislation in terms of our devolution agenda.

Ramaphosa denies buying votes during CR17 campaign
President Cyril Ramaphosa has told the State Capture Commission that contrary to some media reports, there’s nothing sinister about his CR17 campaign
African National Congress (ANC) president Cyril Ramaphosa is finally coming clean about his rise to the Union Buildings and has dismissed claims that he dug deep into his pockets to secure votes for himself during the party’s elective conference in December 2017.
Ramaphosa testified before the State Capture Commission on Thursday, 29 April 2021. Since defeating Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to become ANC president and by extension, head of state, a dark cloud has hung over how exactly he managed to do that.
DA wants Zondo Commission to subpoena ANC cadre deployment records
The DA said the records will provide proof of ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa’s true involvement in cadre deployment
The DA intends writing to the commission’s chairperson, Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Raymond Zondo for a third time, requesting him to subpoena the full set of ANC cadre deployment records.
Ramaphosa testified before the commission about the ANC’s handling of corruption and cadre deployment, among other matters. He previously chaired the party’s deployment committee from 2013 to 2017.
He told the commission that the appointments of controversial figures like Brian Molefe and Matshela Koko to Eskom as well as Dudu Myeni to South African Airways (SAA), bypassed the ANC’s deployment committee.
