‘I Don’t Want to Hear It’: Florida School Board Confronted Over Relationship Between School Leaders and Students After Black Girl Is Knocked Unconscious
A now-viral video out of central Florida depicted Taylor Bracey of Osceola County being body-slammed by a Liberty High School school resource officer on Jan. 26 as the 16-year-old Black girl reportedly was involved in an altercation with other students. This week citizens and several community organizations showed up to a Lake County School Board meeting in Tavares, Florida, to voice their concerns about the relationship between school leaders and Black students.
“There’s absolutely no reason why a police officer, a grown man, should ever knock a girl unconscious or taze a student,” said David Caicedo, the president of the Florida Student Power Network, referencing both Bracey’s case and that of another black girl who was tasered by a school resource officer at Lake County’s Eustis High School on Jan. 26.
The rally was held more than a week after Osceola County Deputy Ethan Fournier slammed Taylor onto the concrete, causing her to apparently lose consciousness. Fournier was placed on paid administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues its criminal probe into the incident.
Injunctions have been filed against the Liberty High School student body-slammed by an Osceola sheriff’s deputy by two mothers whose daughters attend the school.
The mothers say they filed the injunctions against 16-year-old Taylor Bracey for their daughters’ protection. In a viral video shared widely last week, Bracey was body-slammed to the ground by Osceola Deputy Ethan Fournier last month. Bracey was knocked unconscious when her head hit the concrete. She is now seeing a neurologist for headaches, memory loss, and blurred vision, according to the family’s attorney. Footage of the takedown sparked outrage.
Fournier has been placed on leave pending the investigation. The sheriff’s office has defended Fournier, and claims the parents’ accounts of Bracey’s behavior prove parents should “stop making excuses” for their kids.
The mothers of two students at Liberty High School have filed injunctions for their daughters’ protection against the 16-year-old student who was body slammed to the ground by an Osceola deputy during a fight last week, WKMG reported. Natalie Jackson, an Orlando attorney representing the Bracey family, said she has not seen an injunction.

The BRUTALITY of an @OsceolaSheriff deputy body-slamming a student at Liberty HS in Kissimmee FL, hit so hard on concrete she likely lost consciousness! This was NOT a “minimal amount of force necessary” as dictated by the Dept’s use of force policy! We must demand justice! pic.twitter.com/zm8cwQb2gZ
