The canal is leased to the mining company, Intrepid Potash, which uses it as a drainage ditch
Despite its stunning blue color, the canal went largely unnoticed by the public until last summer, when an Instagram user posted photos that went viral
Since then, thousands have been flocking to the canal to swim, kayak and snap their own images, much to the alarm of land and environment agencies
