A campaign is now underway to help those suffering from grief and mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. FOX 26 s Rashi Vats has more.
HOUSTON - Grief and mental illness are increasing amid the pandemic according to experts, and a campaign is hoping to help bring hope to millions of people. It has been absolutely a very hard week. I am getting teary-eyed just thinking about it. I think the absence was greater than I anticipated, said Marilu Garza who lost her mother a few months ago. I don’t want to say that this is the new norm. I hate that. I absolutely hate that because there was nothing wrong with the old norm.

HOUSTON – 2020 has been a year we will never forget. The pandemic changed how we do things and impacted people’s mental health, but experts say there is a lot to look forward to this new year.
“I think that this year for many people has been incredibly exhausting and emotionally and psychologically taxing,” Julie Kaplow said.
KPRC 2 spoke to Kaplow. She’s the executive director of the Trauma and Grief Center at the Hackett Center for Mental Health.
“Things have been very busy during the pandemic for sure,” she said.
Midland attorney Cole organizes gift giveaway

Midland and Gladwin County grandparents, parents and caregivers impacted by the floodwaters in May were able to pick out Christmas gifts for their grandchildren and children during a giveaway Wednesday, Dec. 23, hosted and organized by local attorney Angela Cole.
Grandparents, parents and caregivers stopped by Cole’s Wrecker Service in Sanford to choose from a large selection of children’s homemade quilts, toys, games, bikes, hats, mittens and clothing for a variety of ages, which were provided by Sadie’s Dream, the Children’s Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region, the Michigan State Police, Great Lakes Bay Veterans Coalition, residents of Old Oak Trails Estates, Amy Livsey, Joan Herbert, Sue Drager Carl, Pam Fagan and the quilter’s group at Trinity Lutheran Church. Each person who attended was also able to pick out one adult-sized homemade quilt.
