Michigan Radio joins new Solutions Journalism Partnership to cover local caregivers

Caregivers are in short supply due to a rapidly growing older population that is living longer and requiring more assistance. The caregivers who step up, both family members and those who are paid to do the job, face many physical, emotional and financial challenges that have been exacerbated by the pandemic. Michigan Radio is part of a new media initiative that aims to shed light on caregivers for older adults and investigate potential solutions to their challenges.  Sixteen media outlets in Southeast Michigan are tackling the issue as part of a journalism collaborative supported by the Solutions Journalism Network.   The collaborative will publish news content with the goal of raising awareness about caregiving issues and introducing the community to replicable ideas that have been vetted by a team of journalists.  You can find the first of these stories

Better Judgment An alternative to arrest? Police turn to diversion for petty crimes

Email address: Part of “Better Judgment,” a Story Series Produced by The Keene Sentinel, a Member of Around 5 p.m. on Dec. 20, Officer Matt Lima of the Somerset (Mass.) Police Department pulled up to a Stop & Shop for a report of shoplifting. An employee had seen women putting groceries in bags without scanning them various food items, including a ham, totaling about $220. Lima spoke to the women, a mother whose two kids were with her and their aunt, he recalled in an interview. They admitted the theft, told him they knew it was wrong and had no prior records. Getting emotional, the aunt “gestured towards the kids and said it was Christmas dinner,” Lima said.

Solutions Journalism -Reporting on problems while seeking solutions

December 29, 2020 With a few simple questions and just a little extra effort, reporters and editors can quickly improve the quality and value of their work and raise the profile and credibility of their news organization. This column expresses the views of Bart Pfankuch, content director of South Dakota News Watch; contact him at bart.pfankuch@sdnewswatch.org. And if done correctly, and regularly, this new method of reporting stories can lead to positive changes in our communities and the lives of residents. The concept is called “solutions journalism,” and it was defined and launched by the appropriately named Solutions Journalism Network. This new form of journalism seeks to look for and cover topics of great importance by examining responses to problems, seeking out and defining solutions, and sharing with readers what is working in our society and why.
