$80 million in fabricated ‘management fees’ unsupported by formalized agreements and documented only through a one-line invoice, as well as millions of dollars in interest on intercompany loans. Leaders of some of the largest police agencies in Maine said Monday they have checked travel reports and confirmed none of their officers participated in the Jan. 6 siege of the Capitol or the rally by President Trump held immediately before it.
Others said they have received no information that any of their officers participated, but will take action if they do.
Police agencies around the country are facing the question after departments in several states took disciplinary steps against officers who were in the mob that tried to derail Congress’ certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the election.

SPRINGFIELD City planners are proposing an overlay zone along Main Street in the downtown-South End area intended to encourage development surrounding the MGM casino and MassMutual Center.
The Planning Board, after a hearing this week, voted to recommend approval of the district, known as the “Main Street and Convention Center Overlay District.”

In the year since the Covid pandemic began, glimmers of hope have come on the horizon. Vaccines are on the way, and the percentage of patients who die has fallen in many places as doctors have learned how to save the sickest patients.
These successes are not enough and they overshadow the more limited progress made toward developing drugs that could prevent mild cases of the disease from worsening. Such treatments are urgently needed because many people will get sick with Covid until vaccines induce enough herd immunity in the population to keep the infections under control.
