Six years after police murder – Tamir Rice family demands justice

Six years after police murder – Tamir Rice family demands justice By Martha Grevatt posted on May 18, 2021 Cleveland Tamir’s Campaign held a virtual event May 12 to demand the federal Department of Justice reopen the case of Tamir Rice, who was only 12 years old when Cleveland police murdered him Nov. 22, 2014. The DOJ under the Trump administration quietly closed its investigation last year with no charges against officer Timothy Loehmann, who shot Tamir instantaneously after coming across him playing with a pellet gun, or Loehman’s partner Frank Garmback. Previously a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury declined to indict either cop, and both remained on the force until Loehmann was fired not for killing Tamir but for lying on his job application!

ACLU sues Ohio Parole Board over confidential letters from victims families in hearing process

ACLU sues Ohio Parole Board over confidential letters from victims’ families in hearing process Updated 3:36 PM; CLEVELAND, Ohio Civil-rights advocates say the Ohio Parole Board unfairly allows confidential letters written by victims’ family members to play a role in the panel’s decisions on whether to grant prisoners parole. As a result, inmates and their lawyers cannot challenge the letters or dispute their contents. Advocates say the practice hinders prisoners’ chances for release. The American Civil Liberties Union and the Ohio Justice & Policy Center filed suit Thursday against the board and the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. The lawsuit cites the cases of two inmates convicted of murder whom the board initially deemed suitable for release. They later were rejected based on letters and information from the victims’ family members, according to the lawsuit.

Prosecutors in Cuyahoga County among the nation s leaders in seeking the death penalty since 1970s, researchers say

Prosecutors in Cuyahoga County among the nation’s leaders in seeking the death penalty since 1970s, researchers say John Caniglia, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio Cuyahoga County has been one of the leading counties in the country in imposing the death penalty since 1972, a push that appears to be propelled by its past handling of such cases, a recent study found. Researchers say that the county and a cluster of others with large numbers of death cases are expected to continue pushing the sentence based upon their knowledge of the complex legal process and the culture of their communities. “This model shows that the cumulative number of death sentences previously imposed in the same county is a strong predictor of the number imposed in a given year,” says the study, “Learning to Kill: Why a Handful of Counties Generates the Bulk of U.S. Death Sentences.”
