The High Court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Datta Mane, seeking a direction to the Union and State governments to provide Z-plus security to Poonawalla after he reportedly said that he was receiving threats over the supply of vaccine.

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Friday told the Bombay High Court bench of Justices Sambhaji Shinde and Nizamoodin Jamadar that it would provide security to Adar Poonawalla, the chairperson of Serum Institute of India (SII), which manufactures the Covishield vaccine. The state further said it would provide security if Poonawalla makes such request.
The bench was seized with a PIL filed by advocate Datta Mane seeking protection for Poonawalla on the ground that he has been allegedly threatened by some powerful politicians and big businessmen demanding more supply of the vaccine. The plea further sought a thorough probe into the alleged threats extended to him.
MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday said the Maharashtra government must assure the Serum Institute of India s (SII) CEO, Adar Poonawalla, of requisite security in the wake of alleged threats to him over the supply of the Covishield vaccine manufactured by his company.
A vacation bench of Justices SS Shinde and Abhay Ahuja said by manufacturing the anti-Covid-19 vaccine, Poonawalla was doing a great service to the nation and the state government s highest functionaries must look into the issue of his security.
It said the state s top officials must personally speak to Poonawalla, who recently went to London, and assure him of his safety upon his return to India.
