JANESVILLE
Janesville Fire Department Deputy Chief Jim Ponkauskas has been named interim chief of the fire department as the current chief, Ernie Rhodes, plans to leave next month.
City Police and Fire Commission member Tim Lindau confirmed the commission moved Wednesday to name Ponkauskas interim chief after Rhodes announced his pending resignation after holding the departmentâs top post for two years.
Rhodes wrote last week in a letter to Janesville City Manager Mark Freitag that Rhodes intends to resign effective Aug. 18.
Rhodes is taking a new job as fire chief in Clayton, Missouri, a small city in suburban St. Louis.

The sad saga of the disgraced former Madison police chief Bruce Weatherly comes to a tragic end on Wednesday July 25 when his wife, Inez, shoots him in the stomach with his own .38 caliber revolver at their home in his native San Antonio, Texas. “I just shot your daddy,” Mrs. Weatherly tells her daughter as she comes downstairs to call police before driving across town to her mother’s house, where she was arrested. Weatherly, 49, dies about an hour later. Mrs. Weatherly, 43, tells investigators she did it because Weatherly had been drinking heavily and was “sick, sick, sick. I couldn’t stand it any longer,” she says, “God forgive me.”

NORWALK, Conn. The Fire Department conducted a ceremony Wednesday for the promotions of 11 of its members, including, for the first time, two assistant fire chiefs.
All but one of the 11 were selected for promotion last January by the Fire Commission and have been serving in their new positions, but their ceremonial swearings-in were delayed because of the pandemic.
