Having been a part of the Salesian community since her childhood, Julienne Schembri was struck by the energy, happiness and connection which surrounded the
Teatru Salesjan (Salesian Theatre). The dance and movement creative thus started to explore how she could build a relationship with this community and was eventually asked to help out as community coordinator. She feels very lucky to have been given this opportunity.
When voters selected Joe Biden as the next president, Juan Cisneros offered a lukewarm congratulations.
Cisneros, a 19-year-old computer science student at Benedictine University in Mesa, Arizona, is still fuming about immigration policy under former President Barack Obama, who oversaw a surge in deportations and was famously dubbed the “Deporter in Chief” by leading immigrant-rights groups. An undocumented immigrant who moved to the U.S. from Mexico on his 7th birthday, Cisneros accused the president-elect in November of taking Latinos for granted though his efforts to rally Arizona voter turnout likely helped Biden win that state.

Illinois introduced two new homebuyer assistance programs that aim to break down barriers to homeownership for communities of color.
To help overcome obstacles like saving enough money for a down payment and qualifying for a mortgage, the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) developed the SmartBuy and Opening Doors programs.
Housing Action Illinois Policy Director Bob Palmer told the
Illinois Radio Network that IHDA is making a targeted effort to market these programs in disinvested communities like communities of color.
“They can’t get a loan on their own because they find out they don’t have the down payment saved or maybe based on the underlying criteria that the bank is using they can’t qualify for enough of a loan to buy a house in a community that they want to live in,” Palmer said.
