Luz Cortez has spent months preparing for May 21st, her graduation day. It means so much to me because I would be the first one in my family s generation to graduate, Cortez said. Like many seniors, Cortez took graduation pictures to share with her friends and family, but what she didn t know, was that one of the props used in the picture would cost her the opportunity to walk with her class. 

Jerome Bettis talks up skilled trades on signing day

Jerome Bettis’ father was the chief electrical inspector for the city of Detroit for more than 30 years, and Bettis says he probably would have pursued a similar line of work if his gridiron prowess hadn’t pulled him in other directions. The former running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers fondly recalled his dad’s work at the 84 Lumber store in South Fayette Township Tuesday morning on “National Signing Day 2021” for high school seniors looking to pursue careers in the skilled trades. As in high school athletics, 10 students pledged to work in the skilled trades, which can include such areas as plumbing, home construction, carpentry or nursing.

The event also fundraised money for the high school’s Skills USA program. The Skills USA program supports students going to nationals in metal, woodshop, and culinary arts classes. Ben Brown, a volunteer at the car show for nearly the last two decades, says being able to host the show again is exciting, after canceling last year’s event due to COVID-19. “It’s a labor of love, you sit there and bang your head against the wall during the whole process, but once you’re out here and you see how much people enjoy being out and about, even if they have to wear a mask, they’re just happy to be outside,” said Brown.

5 for Good: Students refurbish bikes for Habitat for Humanity

For months, students at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School have been spending time every week refurbishing bikes.At first, 11th grader Shannen Hardy said most of them had no idea what to do. I did not know a lick of it, she said. Taking them apart and rebuilding them definitely helped me learn, said Alyssa Bach, another 11th grader taking part in the effort.The bike project got underway as part of the Skills USA program at the high school.Students in the program learn more than the standard curriculum including personal, workplace and technical skills.Peggy Riley-O’Brian is the program coordinator and a teacher at the high school.“They become well-rounded in their trade, but also in other things,” Riley-O’Brian said. “One of the tenets of the organization is that we do community service. The school has long supported Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod. This year, Riley-O’Brian came up with the idea of gifting donated and then refurbished bikes to children in nee

–The Rotary Club of Paso Robles Sunrise has announced that in lieu of holding what would have been their 21st Annual Crab Feed this last March, they will be holding an “It’s Been a Crabby Year” virtual auction from May 19 to May 22. All proceeds from this event benefit the Rotary Club of Paso Robles Sunrise Foundation nonprofit, which distributes multiple scholarships to Paso Robles High School graduates, sponsors high school juniors to attend the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Camp (RYLA), and support Skills USA for high school vocational students. Rotary Sunrise also supports Polio Eradication, and numerous community programs and projects such as the EOD Warrior Foundation, ECHO, and RISE.
