Judge freezes COVID hazard pay approved by Shiawassee commissioners

Judge freezes COVID hazard pay approved by Shiawassee commissioners Flint A Genesee County judge has ordered a freeze on COVID-19 hazard payments to dozens of Shiawassee County employees after a lawsuit alleged the county board violated Michigan s Open Meetings Act while approving the payments.  Circuit Judge Mark Latchana said Monday he will sign an order granting a preliminary injunction pulling back the payments until the Shiawassee County Board of Commissioners meets again to reconsider the appropriation.  The board s next meeting is Aug. 12. It is not yet clear whether Latchana s order will apply to all COVID-19 hazard payments about $557,000 to 250 county employees or only to those payments that were above $5,000.

Judge Effectively Tells Western Heights Board To Follow State Probation Conditions

By: Augusta McDonnell OKLAHOMA CITY - More developments in a court case involving The Western Heights Independent School District and the Oklahoma State Board of Education.  The initial case was filed in late April, after the Western Heights School Board sued the state Board of Education.  Both parties appeared in a hearing Thursday. Judge Timmons determined that the district must immediately go through the probationary process that is currently available to them.  Timmons also dismissed complaints that the state Board of Education violated the Open Meetings Act. This probationary process started in April, and to this day, state spokespeople said the district has not taken steps to fix any of the problems they’ve been asked to fix to keep the district’s accreditation.

Editorial — Governing by loophole: Smith cops to knowing how to bypass state's Open Meetings Law | Editorials

Watertown Mayor Jeffrey Smith tipped his hand this week when discussing his method of reaching consensus on the City Council. He called council members last month to ask what they thought of a proposal to give $445,000 to Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown, according to a story published Tuesday by the Watertown Daily Times. The organization is expanding its Gotham Street facility by four beds (a $2.37 million project), and it wants to use this money to enhance its ventilation system. This would reduce the likelihood of spreading the novel coronavirus through the building and infecting patients. The money would come from the Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, part of the more than $22 million the city received through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 passed by Congress earlier this year. The proposal offered by Hospice of Jefferson County is an example of what federal legislators had in mind when they approved this funding.
