Riverside Research, a not-for-profit organization serving the public interest, has taken on a critical role in providing college students the opportunity to directly apply classroom learning toward advanced innovation and development. Program Manager Steve Harper Intelligence & Defense Solutions (IDS) and Senior Engineer Mark Brunn (IDS) have promoted partnership efforts between Ohio State University (OSU) undergraduate students and Riverside Research in their role as problem sponsors. Jarrod Manguiat, another engineer and team mentor, has also taken on a paramount role with his invaluable insight as a subject area expert. Jay Stowe, the new CEO of Jacksonville’s municipal water and electric utility since Nov. 30, inherited an organization cooperating in a federal grand jury probe and preparing a five-year, $2.5 billion capital investment plan.
His hiring ended a 1½-year period that saw an attempt to sell JEA to a private company, resulting in U.S. Department of Justice and City Council investigations and the firing of former CEO Aaron Zahn and his senior leadership team.
Stowe plans to repair trust within JEA while moving on plans to invest $1.6 million to modernize its its water and wastewater system.
Yaskawa Electric to Build New R&D Center
Yaskawa Electric will open a new R&D facility called the Yaskawa Technology Center in March 2021. The center will be housed in a new building to be built next to its head office and industrial robot plant in Kitakyushu. The company aims to cluster the development functions it has throughout Japan in one location and bring together around 600 engineers to work on robot and motor development. Within the Technology Center, Yaskawa also plans to open an Open Innovation Center, which will bring together knowledge and skills from a variety of fields under one roof. The company aims to boost its international competitiveness by combining its technologies with emerging technologies from universities to develop new technologies and products.

FREMONT, CA: Fujitsu Limited, a multinational IT equipment, and services firm, and Zippin, a software company, announced a new partnership that named Fujitsu as the exclusive distributor of Zippin s check-out-free solution in Japan.
Fujitsu is Zippin s first exclusive distributor and will begin offering Zippin s cash-free solution by March 2021 to establish a new artificial intelligence smart store company for the micro-market. In the future, the partners will further improve their partnership and consider expanding geography beyond Japan.
