Department of Sociology’s initiative proves to be a success
Kerala University’s aspirations to make its Karyavattom campus ‘green’ have shown encouraging signs with efforts being made from within to adopt sustainable practices and implement a source-level solid waste management system on campuses.
Despite the university lacking a sustainable solid waste management protocol, the Department of Sociology has successfully turned its premises into a zero-waste institution through two years of focused efforts that involved doing away with plastics and other non-biodegradable products with eco-friendly alternatives.
REPL to revamp sewerage management in Kerala capital

To provide detailed engineering project report, drawings and estimates for the most feasible solutions for sewerage and septage management of the city
Kerala Water Authority has appointed Rudrabhishek Enterprises (REPL), Delhi-based infrastructure consultants, to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for rehabilitation of existing sewerage system and to provide sewerage management system for the as-yet uncovered areas of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
Sandhya P, Superintending Engineer of Kerala Water Authority, and Dinesh Sharma, Senior Manager, Infrastructure Services of Rudrabhishek Enterprises Ltd (REPL), signed an agreement here to the effect. The duration of the project will be eight months, an official spokesman said here.

Project involves beautification of capital city
Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran will formally launch the third phase of Arteria, the city’s beautification project, on Friday.
The endeavour, which will mostly involve restoration of the mural paintings undertaken during the other phases, will get under way near the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation office.
Secretary of Social Justice Department Biju Prabhakar, who is a member of the renovation committee, said the government has sanctioned ₹10 lakh for the purpose.
Besides, another ₹2.5 lakh that had been allocated by the Tourism Department for maintenance of the art works during the previous phases will also be utilised.

‘It will help give a focused approach to development’
The Cochin Chamber of Commerce has demanded expansion of the Kochi Corporation limits to give a focused approach for development.
The chamber in its pre-budget memorandum submitted to Finance Minister Thomas Isaac contended that while other major towns grew in area, Kochi has more or less stood still since its formation.
The Kochi Corporation covers an area of only 94.88 sq. km. But the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, which had an area of only 30.66 sq. km. during its formation has grown to 214.86 sq. km. This will give a focused approach for development, Cochin Chamber president K. Harikumar said.

For best houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana project
Mukkam municipality in Kozhikode district has bagged the Union government’s award for excellence in implementing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)-Life project for 2019.
The Union government’s awards for best houses under the project have gone to Lakshmi G. of Mudavanmugal in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation; A.R. Ragashree of Varkala municipality; and Babitha Ashraf of Irinjalakuda municipality.
Besides Mukkam, seven municipal bodies too have received the Union government’s award.
Mukkam municipal chairperson P.T. Babu; vice chairperson Chandani, secretary N.K. Harish, former chairperson Kunjan received the award comprising certificate and memento from Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri in an online function attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
