Hospitality and retail outlets reopen as NI takes major step out of lockdown

Northern Ireland has taken a major stride out of lockdown as many hospitality and retail outlets reopened their doors after four months of closure. Publicans, cafe owner and restaurateurs are now able to trade outdoors, while all non-essential retailers can pull their shutters up once again. There were long queues outside popular retail outlets such as Primark in Belfast from early on Friday morning as hundreds of shoppers returned to the city centre. As more economic wheels started turning, Health Minister Robin Swann announced that the region’s vaccine programme is now open to the 30-34 age group. Some limited appointments for people in that cohort will be available at the mass vaccination centre at Belfast’s SSE Arena.

Van-Tam hopes existing Covid vaccines will give protection against variants

England’s deputy chief medical officer has said he hopes existing vaccines will give protection against coronavirus variants as it was announced an extra 60 million jab doses have been secured for an autumn booster programme. Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said it was difficult to assess how new variants could impact vaccines being rolled out in the UK, but added that he hoped the inoculations would continue to protect against severe illness. It comes as the Government announced that an extra 60 million doses of the vaccine by Pfizer and BioNTech have been secured for a booster vaccination programme in the autumn. This additional stock of the jab – which has been rolled out in the UK since December – is the same as the version currently in use, and so is not variant specific.

PM told to establish Covid public inquiry now by leading think tanks | Harwich and Manningtree Standard

A public inquiry into the country’s response to the pandemic should be launched immediately, two leading think tanks have said. The Institute for Government (IfG) said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson should establish his promised public inquiry into the Government’s handling of coronavirus in May. This would give it time to determine its terms of reference and complete preparatory work such as appointing a secretary and counsel before beginning its investigations in September after Parliament’s summer recess, it added. Meanwhile, the King’s Fund said Government should start work to establish a public inquiry into England’s response to Covid-19 “immediately” so that lessons can be learnt ahead of future threats.
