Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb says that advanced extraterrestrial life is less speculative than dark matter or extra dimensions, or, as Scientific American observes, it’s never aliens, until someday, it is. The Guardian leaked the news that a “tantalizing” radio signal, BLC-1, appears to have come from Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun at just 4.2 light-years.
The signal was detected in archival data gathered last year by the Breakthrough Listen team using the Parkes radio telescope observatory, located 20 kilometers north of the town of Parkes, New South Wales, Australia in its searching for signals of radio-transmitting extraterrestrial civilizations in our Galactic neighborhood that are too narrow and well-defined to result from natural processes.

Something strange is going on at the closest star to the sun. A mysterious radio signal is coming from Proxima Centauri, which is too dim to be seen from Earth with the naked eye. Despite being too dim for us to see from Earth, it’s a cosmic stone throw away at only 4.2 light-years away. A mysterious signal is emanating from the star, which was discovered in archived data gathered last year.
The signal was discovered this fall and appears to come from the direction of Proxima Centauri. As of now, researchers have been unable to dismiss the signal as interference from Earth. While detecting a strange signal coming from a nearby star certainly has tantalizing possibilities, scientists on the project caution, there is still lots of work to be done.

The Parkes radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia, run by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), recently detected an unexplained radio signal coming from the direction of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun.
Astronomers searching for signs of life beyond Earth have spotted something strange. An as-yet unexplained radio signal appears to be coming from the direction of the star closest to the sun a small red star roughly 4.2 light-years away called Proxima Centauri. Adding to the excitement, at least two planets orbit this star, one of which might be temperate and rocky like Earth.
