Ryan Miller, 36, of Manchester, began the journey about 7 a.m. Friday in Sioux City.
Miller said that while making what he expects to be a nine-day run to Dubuque, he ll be thinking about the victims, correctional officer Robert McFarland and prison nurse Lorena Schulte. He said McFarland would take the time to help anyone and Schulte was a devoted caregiver.
He said that by raising awareness through his run he hopes to get people to think more about the Iowa Department of Corrections staff and donate to a fundraiser to send the McFarland family on a vacation. I know I can do it, but how many days in a row, we ll find out, Miller told the Press-Citizen. This is a first-time thing for me so when we talk about something that challenges yourself, this is definitely going to be that for me.
