Pinellas County News Briefs - May 18, 2021

Housing development for homeless gains national recognition Pinellas County’s commitment to housing people in the greatest need has been recognized on a national scale for a recent project to help those who are homeless and disabled. The Sally Poynter Preserves at Clam Bayou in St. Petersburg provides 24 one-bedroom units, with eight set aside specifically for veterans. Each resident receives comprehensive services from Boley Centers staff to ensure their basic needs are met and to help them acquire or restore the skills and support necessary to maintain their independence. Completing this affordable development required a unique public-private partnership exemplified in an Award of Excellence at the spring 2021 conference of the National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies.

WSCC offers basic academy | News, Sports, Jobs

Staff Reporter This fall, those seeking to become law enforcement officers will have the chance through the Peace Officer Basic Academy at Washington State Community College. Dr. Jona Hall, dean of transfer and public services at WSCC, said through the academy, a person will learn everything they need to know to become a law enforcement officer to patrol the streets. This academy is different from those in the recent past, as classes will be held in the evenings Monday through Friday. “Monday through Friday is mandatory attendance, with some weekends,” Hall said. “That’s the draw on this particular academy. It’s an evening academy for people who work during the day.”
