In Africa as elsewhere in the world the wealthiest have come through the pandemic just fine. The continent’s 18 billionaires are worth an average $4.1 billion, 12% more than a year ago, driven in part by Nigeria’s surging stock market. For the tenth year in a row, Aliko Dangote of Nigeria is the continent’s richest person, worth $12.1 billion, up by $2 billion from last year’s list thanks to a roughly 30% rise in the share price of Dangote Cement, by far his most valuable asset. The second richest is Nassef Sawiris of Egypt, whose largest asset is a nearly 6% stake in sportswear maker Adidas. At number three: Nicky Oppenheimer of South Africa, who inherited a stake in diamond firm DeBeers and ran the company until 2012, when he sold his family’s 40% stake in DeBeers to mining giant AngloAmerican for $5.1 billion.

MTN is the latest mobile operator to take the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) to court, after smaller rival Telkom sought the court’s help in December to halt the sale, a move ICASA says it will challenge.
The legal disputes threaten to delay the auction that is expected to be held by the end of March.

Liquid Telecoms acquires stake in Quattro Business Solutions
Nairobi, Kenya (PANA) - Liquid Telecom, a subsidiary of Econet Global, owned by Zimbabwean telecom enterpreneur Strive Masiyiwa, said Thursday it had acquired a stake in Quattro Business Solutions (QBS), a major provider of digital services. The strategic acquisition of this international partner allows Liquid Telecom to increase the breadth of digital service offerings to local partners, Liquid Telecoms, which is registered in London, said.
Liquid Telecoms, which operates a fibre optic cable from Johannesburg to Cairo, announced the purchase of the Middle East and African operations of QBS, a leader in the fast-growing ecosystem of Microsoft Dynamics partners.
Icasa will meet MTN in court over 5G spectrum challenge
Communications regulator Icasa said on Friday that it will oppose MTN South Africa’s urgent court application challenging a plan that could see smaller operators get first dibs at a crucial band for 5G telecommunications.
MTN is unhappy with the way Icasa intends making access to the 3.5GHz radio frequency band available in the upcoming spectrum auction, which is set to take place in late March .
The mobile provider is aggrieved because it believes smaller operators those other than MTN and Vodacom will get access to the band, which is key for delivering next-generation 5G broadband services, leaving nothing for the bigger players.
